Sap Floor Lamp, 2025
RED CEDAR, BARK CORDAGE, PINE SAP, SALVAGED CEDAR SHINGLES, AND SALVAGED ALUMINUM
62H X 19W X 6D INCHES
Made from slabs of windthrow cedar felled naturally by windstorms and salvaged cedar shingles stitched together with hand-woven cedar bark cordage, this rough cut floor lamp revives the ancient techniques of harnessing tree sap (pure pine resin) as a natural glue - one of the oldest known adhesives on earth, harvesting trees that have been uprooted by heavy winds, harnessing every part of the tree to ensure nothing is wasted - including the bark (a portion of the tree often discarded without being used), and reworking metal to be used again.
The tree from which this slab came is believed to be over 300 years old based on growth rings.
Instead of kiln drying, the wood was air-dried riverside on the shores of the Mamquam Blind Channel in Squamish, British Columbia.
